Interpersonal/Organizational Communication Internship Info

The Interpersonal/Organizational (I/O) program is pleased to offer students this opportunity for internship credit. Internships provide students valuable applied experience and may lead to post-graduation employment opportunities. The material detailed below provides information that answers most student inquiries about I/O internships.

Eligibility for Internship Credit

  • Only I/O majors are eligible for I/O internships (COM 4941)
  • To qualify for internship credit, students must have taken at least 4 courses from core requirements or communication electives. All 4 courses must have "COM" or "SPC" prefixes. Some courses such as STA 2014, PUR 4110, and ENC 3250 do not establish internship eligibility.
  • Students must have a minimum 2.0 UCF GPA to be eligible to register for an internship.
  • Internships must be communication-related. While communication may be defined in a broad and general way, all internships must employ some form of effective oral and/or written communication and help the student achieve career goals.

Maximum Credit Allowed

Students may receive up to 6 hours of internship credit. These credits may be arranged in the manner most beneficial to the student, i.e., 1 6-hour internship, 2 3-hour internships, etc.

Ratio of Working Hours to Credit Hours

Students are requested to work a minimum of an average of 3 hours per week for each hour of internship credit. A 3-credit internship requires a minimum of 9 hours work per week, a 4-credit internship, a minimum of 12, etc. Students who register for internships during the summer "C" term must average 4 hours per week of work for each hour of credit because of the abbreviated length of the summer term.

Eligible Faculty Sponsors

Only tenured or tenure-earning I/O faculty can sponsor internships.
